android adventures
From 2010-2012, I was the developer and maintainer of Ride In Style, a free Android app by Pinpoint Pickup which let you schedule a swanky towncar ride from your phone. Features included:
- Google Maps/Search integration, so you can choose your current location as the pickup site, or search for an address or landmark on the interactive map
- Setting your pickup time anywhere from 1 hour to 4 weeks in advance
- Booking a ride in any of Pinpoint Pickup’s supported service areas (currently LA and Orange County, San Francisco, Seattle, Las Vegas, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Boston, Phoenix and Tucson)
After releasing Ride In Style in 2011, I’ve contributed to several research/proof-of-concept Android apps which weren’t intended for public consumption. I can’t write much about these projects, but they’ve been valuable learning experiences for my clients and myself. Some interesting features of recent projects included:
- Efficiently interacting with 3rd-party RESTful web APIs using JSON and XML
- Facebook and Dropbox integration
- Audio/video recording and multi-device synchronized playback
- Using custom Android-based APIs on very small form factor (non-phone) wearable devices
